In 1939 he rented the shop in Corso Littorio, later Corso Matteotti, where he remained until 1962.

After the first bombing on Milan, the family and the manufacturing business are decentralised near Lecco, so, to escape the racial persecution, he has to expatriate to Switzerland, where he lives in a nunnery in Neggio, at Lugano. Arteluce remained active during the war years, within the limits of the period, in the care of a procurator.

In 1946, on his return, he opened a small workshop in via Cesena, in a converted flat under his temporary home and in the adjacent space covered by a canopy, and the activity was immediately significant: the first naval delivery was in 1949. In the same year, 1949, he moved into the new factory in Via Bellinzona, 48, which was acquired with funds from his wife’s family and which was to remain the company’s only production site.

In 1950 he founded in Roma, with a brother of his wife, the company ArCon – Arredamento Contemporaneo, which marketed brands of excellence in furnishing and was immediately successful, even in the press, until he gave up his shareholding for family reasons.

In 1962 the owners asked him to leave the shop in Corso Matteotti, 12, for his own commercial needs and so he opened a new large shop, in via della Spiga, 23, with a design by the architect. Vittoriano Viganò.

At the same time, it restructured and then partly raised the factory at Via Bellinzona, 48, which reached its maximum size of just under 800 m² and its maximum capacity of around 35 employees in 1968.

He won many international awards, including in 1954 and in 1955 the Compasso d’oro, with models 559 and 1055.

In December 1973, the year in which he won the gold medal of the XV Triennale, he sold the company, which is no longer in operation. From 1974 he retired to live in Griante di Cadenabbia (CO) where he received visits from scholars: the last meeting was a few days before his death in preparation for the major exhibition at the Centre Georges Pompidou lumières je pense à vous; the guest is Jean François Grunfeld, who writes about him as de the greatest creator of lamps of the 20th century. During the interview and in a subsequent correspondence, Gino Sarfatti traces the entire span of his activity.

He died on 6 March 1985, struck down by stroke brain.

Nel 1939 prende in affitto il negozio in Corso Littorio, poi Corso Matteotti, nel quale resterà sino al 1962.

Dopo i primi bombardamenti su Milano, la famiglia e l’attività di produzione sono decentrati vicino a Lecco, quindi, per sfuggire alle persecuzioni razziali, deve espatriare in Svizzera, dove vive in un convento di suore a Neggio, presso Lugano. Arteluce, nel corso degli anni di guerra, rimane attiva, nei limiti consentiti dal periodo, affidata a una procuratrice.

Nel 1946, al ritorno, apre una piccola officina in via Cesena, in un appartamento riadattato sotto la sua abitazione provvisoria e nello spazio adiacente, coperto da una tettoia e l’attività è immediatamente significativa: la prima fornitura navale è del 1949. Nello stesso 1949 entra nel nuovo stabilimento, in via Bellinzona, 48, acquisito con fondi della famiglia della moglie e che resterà unica sede produttiva della società.

Nel 1950 fonda a Roma, con un fratello della moglie, la società ArCon – Arredamento Contemporaneo, che commercializza marchi di eccellenza nell’arredamento e ha immediatamente successo, anche di stampa, sin quando non cederà la sua partecipazione per esigenze familiari.

Nel 1962 la proprietà gli chiede di lasciare il negozio di Corso Matteotti, 12, per proprie esigenze commerciali e pertanto apre un nuovo grande punto vendita, in via della Spiga, 23, con progetto dell’arch. Vittoriano Viganò.

In parallelo ristruttura e poi sopraeleva in parte lo stabilimento di Via Bellinzona, 48 che, nel 1968, raggiunge la sua massima dimensione, poco meno di 800 m², e la sua massima capienza, di circa 35 dipendenti.

Vince molti premi internazionali, tra i quali, nel 1954 e nel 1955 il Compasso d’oro, con i modelli 559 e 1055.

Nel dicembre del 1973, anno in cui vince la medaglia d’oro della XV Triennale, cede l’azienda, oggi non più operativa. Dal 1974 si ritira a vivere a Griante di Cadenabbia (CO) dove riceve visite di studiosi: l’ultimo incontro è a pochi giorni dalla morte in preparazione della grande mostra al Centre Georges Pompidou lumières je pense à vous; l’ospite è Jean François Grunfeld, che ne scrive come de il più grande creatore di lampade del XX secolo. Durante l’intervista e in un successivo carteggio Gino Sarfatti ripercorre l’intero arco della sua attività.

Muore il 6 marzo 1985, colpito da ictus cerebrale.
